Tour Highlights
Begin in Madras (Chennai), the capital of Tamil Nadu state. Stay in a private beachfront villa at Taj Fisherman's Cove, and visit important cultural sites nearby. Tour the ancient capital city of Kanchipuram, the second holiest Hindu town in India with its tall Temple Gopurams (tower entrance gates) and visit the home of a weaver of silk fabric, for which this town is famous. Also, visit the seaside town of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), where 7th Century Pallavan stonecutters produced some of the finest stone carving in India. Fly Madras to Cochin (Kochi) to spend some time in this evocative harbor town stretched across islands and peninsulas on the Malabar Coast. Tour the city's rich past, flavored by Portuguese, British, Dutch, Chinese and Jewish traders and visit a 500-year old church, a 16th-century synagogue and royal palaces. Then drive to Alleppey and board your personal houseboat for an overnight cruise through the scenic Backwaters of Kerala, to the resort at Kumarakom, on the Vembanad Lake. Take a sunset cruise on the lake and listen to the birdsong drifting out of the nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Perhaps opt for an Ayurvedic massage-a local specialty. Then transfer to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a hilly tiger reserve in Kerala's Western Ghats. Cruise the lake in the early morning, scouting the waters edge for resident elephants, barking deer and birds. Finally, fly back to Madras via Cochin for your onward flight.
